After a styling refresh for the 2026 model year, Nissan has introduced a new Special Edition of the Pathfinder SUV for the 2027 model year. Paying tribute to the original Pathfinder that arrived 40 years ago, the anniversary-themed Pathfinder comes with an interior trimmed in nostalgic-hued materials and gets several more desirable features. The new model slots into the upper half of the Pathfinder lineup, so costs considerably more than the entry-level variant. Unfortunately, the changes for 2027 don’t address one of our main criticisms of the Nissan SUV.

The highlight of the Nissan Pathfinder Special Edition is the two-tone interior, which has been tailored to reference the burgundy cabin of the original 1987 Pathfinder. The 2027 model has black and burgundy TailorFit materials. The red hue is found on the seats, upper door panels, and dashboard. It’s complemented by burgundy stitching and matching floor mats. In addition to the plush cabin, the Pathfinder Special Edition comes with the following extras:

  • Black 20-inch alloy wheels
  • Panoramic moonroof
  • Second-row captain’s chairs
  • Rear door sunshades
  • 12-speaker Bose sound system

As with all other Pathfinder models, the Special Edition comes with a 3.5-liter V6 producing 284 horsepower and 259 lb-ft of torque. Only the rugged Rock Creek model differs, with outputs bumped up to 295 hp/270 lb-ft for this variant. A nine-speed automatic and front-wheel drive are standard, with 4×4 being an option.

“The Nissan Pathfinder has challenged preconceptions of SUVs for 40 years, giving families more of what they need for the everyday while retaining the rugged confidence that made the original an instant hit,” said Marco Fioravanti, vice president, product planning, Nissan U.S. and Canada. “The Pathfinder Special Edition celebrates that legacy by connecting one of our most beloved nameplates with the customers and adventures that shaped its story.”

Pricing for the 2027 Pathfinder has only increased for certain trims. The base model starts at $39,990, which is unchanged from 2026 pricing.

Model

MSRP

Pathfinder SV FWD

$39,990

Pathfinder SL FWD

$42,790

Pathfinder Special Edition FWD

$47,390

Pathfinder Platinum FWD

$49,890

Pathfinder SV 4WD

$41,990

Pathfinder SL 4WD

$44,790

Pathfinder Rock Creek 4WD

$45,390

Pathfinder Special Edition 4WD

$49,390

Pathfinder Platinum 4WD

$51,890

The SL is $200 more expensive and the Platinum now costs $100 more. The Rock Creek’s MSRP has gone up by $300. The new Special Edition slots in below only the Platinum. These prices all exclude Nissan’s destination and handling fee of $1,575.

Nissan sold its 2 millionth Pathfinder in September, and the SUV had its best-ever quarterly sales in Q2 2026. Q3 sales were down by 9.5%, but the Pathfinder’s overall 2026 sales are still healthy.

In our 2026 drive of the Pathfinder, we found it to be good rather than great in a crowded segment. The transmission was the main weakness, with the nine-speed automatic often found wanting. The transmission would too often select the wrong gear, to the point that we preferred using the paddle shifters, which isn’t something one expects to have to do in a family SUV.

What It Means

The new Special Edition is a welcome addition to the Pathfinder range and should appeal to anyone who owned a first-generation model. What it won’t do is push the Nissan to the top of the class. The wonky transmission, lack of a hybrid, and the sheer breadth of talent in this segment—including the impressive Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride—stop that from happening. But for Nissan fans who need more space and power than a Rogue offers, the Pathfinder is an appealing three-row option.
