The new Makita TD023DSE 7.2V cordless impact driver has started popping up at tool stores.
Yes, I said impact driver. Did you think this was a cordless screwdriver? Me too.

The new Makita impact driver delivers up to 220 in-lbs of max torque, and has variable speed up to 2450 RPM.
It’s shown here in its ergonomic angled mode.

And you can also straighten it out for inline use.
There’s an LED worklight at the front.
The tool weighs just 1.3 lbs with battery.

Makita has this configured as a kit with charger, 2x 7.2V batteries, and a hard shell tool box.
Price: $294
First Thoughts

Shown here is the new Makita model TD023DSE on the left, and older model TD022DSE on the right. From what I’m seeing, the torque and speed specs are the same.
The new model weighs a tiny bit more, but looks slightly more compact.
There might not be obvious reasons for current users to upgrade to Makita’s newest 7.2V impact driver. But if you’re buying one, I don’t see any benefits to the older version or downsides to the newer tool.
I was initially surprised that it doesn’t have a torque clutch, but that was before I realize it was an impact driver.
$294?
