EV batteries don’t last forever, and they degrade over time. After countless charge cycles, the driving range eventually drops. But what happens after an EV battery reaches the end of its lifecycle? Safely disposing of or recycling these lithium-ion batteries remains one of the most common concerns surrounding electric cars. Well, Porsche has taken a step forward to recycle and reuse end-of-life EV batteries by partnering with cylib, a battery recycling company in Germany founded in 2022.
Porsche Is Giving Old EV Batteries A Second Life
So, it’s basically like Porsche will be using its own dead batteries to help power future Porsche cars. The German automaker has recently produced battery cells that have cathode active materials made up of recycled materials extracted from its own end-of-life high-voltage batteries. The goal is to create a closed-loop circular economy for the batteries used in electric cars, which, in turn, will reduce dependence on global sources for raw materials required to make new ones. For context, China controls over 70 percent of the world EV market. However, reusing old EV batteries could potentially help solve major supply issues, not just for Porsche but for Europe as a whole.
The whole process of recycling is divided into three simple stages: recover, refine, and reuse. It all starts with dismantling the old/used EV batteries to recover the raw materials in the form of processed black mass. In the next stage, this black mass is further refined to gain essential raw materials like nickel, lithium, cobalt, and manganese. These materials will then be used to make new EV battery cells, completing the recycling process.
What’s Next For Porsche’s Recycled EV Batteries?
Before these recycled EV batteries make their way to production cars, Porsche will make sure that the cells meet its quality and performance standards. Although the automaker has already been testing these new cells in its test cars, with initial results showing positive signs, future testing results will determine whether these batteries are ready for a second life in future Porsche EVs.
Interestingly, Porsche has also stated that it began recycling old EV batteries in May 2026. The recovered raw materials are being tracked through its dedicated material account and will be available for cell production to Porsche or other selected companies by 2028.
