Bosch Voltage Tester Contact Type GVT600-13

Bosch has a new contact-type voltage tester, GVT600-13, and I’m a bit perplexed by the design.

The product listing says that it’s for fast, straightforward testing, and that it was designed for use on outlets, breaker panels, and electrical systems.

I see the test lead connections – the shrouded banana jacks labeled COM and V.

Klein MM500 Multimeter Dust and Water Proof

Klein Tools used to have a very basic multimeter that was primarily for measuring voltage (see Tested: Klein’s new Rugged and Waterproof Multimeter).

I guess this new Bosch contact voltage tester is essentially a simplified meter. Does that sound about right?

An integrated flashlight helps improve visibility in dimply lit work spaces. The meter is said to be “GFCI compatible.”

The Bosch contact voltage tester is rated at IP54 for dust and water resistance.

It’s auto-ranging and can measure AC and DC voltages up to 600V. The meter meets CAT IV 600V safety standards.

Bosch says the meter is “built for the jobsite.”

Unless someone corrects me otherwise, I’m going to assume this is more of a compact and simplified voltage meter, rather than just a “contact voltage tester.” When I see “voltage tester,” my brain tends to translate to “go/no-go conditions checker.”

Bosch also does have non-contact voltage testers on the way – see Bosch Launched New Electrical Voltage Testers.

Price: $60

Discussion

Assuming I’m correct, and that this is more of a simplified voltage-measuring digital multimeter, why might one buy this?

Size, cost, and function.

This Bosch meter is going to be considerably smaller and less expensive than a higher-featured digital multimeter.

While a lot of diagnostic, measurement, and troubleshooting work requires more testing functions beyond just voltage, there’s a lot of work that only requires a quick voltage check.

It’s always good to have more options.

I haven’t seen a lot of limited-scope voltage meters like this – have you?

Bosch also has other DMMs on the way – more on those soon.
