Safety Above All Else

Volvo’s popularity was born out of sensibility, reliability, but most importantly, safety. The Swedish carmaker was one of the very first mainstream brands to put safety as the most important aspect of its brand culture, leading to multiple breakthrough features we now take for granted every day.

Although the world has caught up to Volvo in terms of matching its safety-first mindset, they still lead in that category. However, a recall has just been issued that affects the brand’s stellar safety rating.

Reduced Headrest Cushioning

A safety recall report has just been issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that concerns Volvo’s small EV, the EX30 and EX30 Cross Country. The specific EX30’s involved in the recall are the 2025-2026 models built from Sep 04, 2023 – Jul 16, 2026 (EX30), and Mar 05, 2023 – Aug 28, 2026 (EX30CC). The total number of affected cars is 9,930.

The NHTSA’s report explains the issue: “Pertains to motor vehicle safety due to reduced head restraint cushion support during a severe crash may increase the risk of occupant injury.” Further explained later in the report, alarmingly, it says that the head restraint might detach during a severe accident, which we know isn’t something that should happen at all. NHTSA also explains that the headrest might detach during high-speed accidents and if there are impacts from multiple directions. Based on Volvo’s internal investigation, these are caused by ‘insufficient fastening.’

No Injuries So Far

Part of the report also details the chronological order in which Volvo found out about the issue. It began back in September of 2025, when the brand received information that the headrest restraint cushion attachment had a potential issue. Volvo, together with the supplier of the part, Magna Seating Baoji, launched an internal investigation to assess whether the information regarding the issue was correct. A year into the investigation, the automaker classified the issue as critical and launched the recall campaign.

To fix the issue, Volvo will put two-component epoxy adhesive at three attachment points using the specified tools. The effectiveness of the remedy has been confirmed through physical testing, which demonstrated a clear improvement in overall strength. To those with EX30’s that fall under the recall are encouraged to get the fix immediately, because the NHTSA report says that 100% of the affected cars are defective.
