The iX3 Gets Busy
Perhaps the biggest story from BMW is its Neue Klasse platform, which underpins its next generation of electric vehicles, including the iX3, and the numbers back that up. After receiving 100,000 orders in Europe, the Bavarian automaker ramped up production of the iX3 at its Debrecen plant in Hungary, which now works around the clock with three shifts.
This follows production starting in October 2025 and the addition of a second shift in February 2026. BMW said the facility achieved the quickest production ramp-up of any new plant in the company’s history. Even in the U.S., where deliveries have already begun, the company reportedly allowed dealers to start deliveries nine days earlier than planned amid strong demand.

Setting The Tone
The demand suggests BMW’s Neue Klasse overhaul is resonating with buyers. The iX3 is the first model using the platform, pairing an 800-volt architecture with a new design language that also influences non-EV models, including the 2027 X5.
BMW also reached its two-millionth EV delivery milestone last month, a total dating back to the original i3 from 2013, back when it was still a hatchback. The automaker said the Neue Klasse is now providing additional momentum for its EV sales.
While U.S.-bound iX3 examples are currently produced in Hungary, BMW plans to build the model at its San Luis Potosi plant in Mexico from 2027. No confirmation yet whether U.S.-bound examples will eventually come from there. In China, meanwhile, the automaker has also developed a long-wheelbase version with a wheelbase extended by 108 mm, or about 4.3 inches.

The Future Starts Here
In the U.S., the iX3, which starts at $61,500 before destination, is available with a dual-motor setup capable of delivering 463 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque. When plugged into a fast DC charger, the EV can recharge from 10% to 80% in just 21 minutes. The model also has an EPA-estimated range of up to 434 miles on a single charge.
The iX3’s sedan counterpart, the i3, already began production last month at BMW’s Munich plant in Germany. It is set to arrive in the U.S. in 2027. Another incoming Neue Klasse-underpinned model is the electric M3, which is due in 2027 and set to become M’s first fully electric model based on the next-gen architecture. It is confirmed to run a four-motor setup but hasn’t announced horsepower figures. A four-digit output figure isn’t being chased, although the setup should still make another major showcase for the platform.
