Tesla Clears Some Shelf Space

Despite slower-than-expected demand for electric vehicles in the U.S., Tesla remains the market leader and showed signs of recovery in the second quarter, even as many rivals struggled. Moving forward, however, the EV maker appears to be dropping some products, which could help it focus on other areas of its business. One notable removal is its in-house vinyl-wrap program.

The development was first highlighted by X user Phoenix Self-Driving. The vinyl-wrap listings for the Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck also appear to be gone from Tesla’s online shop. The company hasn’t issued an official statement, so it remains unclear whether the removal is permanent. If it is, the move would end a short-lived program following its U.S. launch in late 2023.

When a Wrap Was More Than a Wrap

According to Not a Tesla App, the program launched with urethane-based paint protection film, which provided better protection than traditional vinyl. A clear version was offered for $5,000, while colored options cost between $7,500 and $8,000. The program later expanded to the Cybertruck before Tesla lowered its prices and switched to cheaper traditional vinyl.

Those changes may have suggested that the program was struggling to gain traction. It was reportedly available in two states only, while competing with a plethora of aftermarket shops. One such company is Unplugged Performance, which showcases wrap projects across the entire Tesla lineup. The California-based tuner also demonstrated its capabilities with an off-road-ready Cybertruck finished in desert-inspired colored PPF.

However, Tesla still lists XPEL paint protection film, which is installed by certified XPEL dealers and focuses more on protecting vehicles than changing their appearance. It is thicker than vinyl and can self-heal minor scratches and swirl marks with heat.

The Shop Cleanout Continues

In addition to the vinyl-wrap service, other products removed from Tesla’s online shop reportedly include the Model 3 Door Pocket and Cupholder Liners, Model S 19-inch Magnetite Wheel and Winter Tire Package, Model X/Y Ski/Snowboard Carrier for Hitch Rack, Electric Summer Party Tee, and Electric Summer Tee.

These changes are unlikely to affect Tesla’s fight for sales in the U.S. Still, eliminating a niche, labor-intensive service could allow the company to focus resources on higher-priority vehicle and service operations. After all, the company is preparing the Cybercab for commercial launch while continuing to develop its Optimus humanoid robot.
