Dewalt FlexVolt Tool and Battery

Earlier today, a reader commented about Dewalt’s FlexVolt line, and how they never got past their confusion. I’m sure this happens.

They said:

I never got my head around FlexVolt, like which tools can use which batteries? I have no idea.

So, here’s a rundown on Dewalt FlexVolt compatibility in as few words as possible:

FlexVolt 60V Max tools require FlexVolt batteries. FlexVolt batteries can be used with 20V Max tools or FlexVolt 60V Max tools.

Does that make sense?

Dewalt FlexVolt batteries are labeled 20V Max and 60V Max because they can be used with Dewalt 20V Max or 60V Max tools.

I won’t get into the technical aspects here. All you really need to know is that Dewalt FlexVolt batteries operate at 20V Max when connected to Dewalt 20V Max tools, or 60V Max when connected to Dewalt FlexVolt 60V Max tools.

Dewalt 20V Max batteries will NOT work with FlexVolt 60V Max tools.

So then why can you use FlexVolt batteries with Dewalt 20V Max tools and accessories? Because that’s how they designed in.

FlexVolt is a higher power and performance system. So, you can use a battery designed for a higher power system with lower power tools. But, you can’t use a battery designed for lower powered tools with a higher powered system.

So, again:

FlexVolt 60V Max tools require FlexVolt batteries. FlexVolt batteries can be used with 20V Max tools or FlexVolt 60V Max tools.

There could be some exceptions, but that’s the gist of it.
