Something Wicked This Way Comes

Ferrari will be launching a very special model in the next couple of weeks. The announcement was allegedly made by company CEO Beneditto Vigna during a recent dealer conference in Las Vegas, according to The Supercar Blog.

At the time, he didn’t say what kind of car the brand would be premiering. “In a few weeks, if you can bear with us a little bit, then you will see something new where we put together something from the past with eyes on the future,” said the executive.

And That Car Might Be…

About a month ago, it was revealed that Ferrari had trademarked a whole load of names it might use in the future. A key hint given by Vigna was ‘something from the past,’ so that rules out any of the hardcore XX models that were trademarked not too long ago.

That leaves us with two choices. The new model could either be the F80 MM/F80 MM Aperta, or the 12Cilindri GTO. MM, or Mille Miglia, is a significant badge for Ferrari, as the company’s participation in that race proved essential in vehicle development. It also helped that Ferrari won the event 11 times after WW2.

As for GTO, it’s a nod to the 250 GTO with the three letters standing for Gran Turismo Omologato. It was last used in the 599 GTO from 2010, and prior to that, it was the 288 GTO from 1984 that wore that badge.

The Launch

So that pretty much narrows down the possible models that will be launched. But we’ll have to wait until July 4 to know the answer. That launch date was confirmed by Vigna during the dealer conference.

Whether it’s the F80 MM/F80 MM Aperta, or the 12Cilindri GTO, both will surely be instant classics that will go to the hands of Ferrari’s most esteemed customers first. That said, we’re leaning more towards the GTO based on a previous report.
