BYD Targets Porsche Taycan
BYD has taken over the world in EV sales, even topping Tesla globally. Now, the Chinese giant is aiming higher with a weapon designed to dismantle the premium electric establishment. Enter the Great Han flagship sedan, internally called the Han 9. In China, this is classified as a D-class vehicle, which is equivalent to a full-size luxury sedan here in the USA, giving it the footprint needed to challenge the Porsche Taycan.
The exterior shares DNA with the Han L, using a horizontal trim piece connecting the headlights. In profile, the Great Han boasts an elongated silhouette where the roofline fastbacks from the B-pillar to mimic European sports sedans. Inside, although not indicated in the cabin, the draws inspiration from the Great Tang SUV, utilizing a layout focused on top-tier luxury, comfort, and digital functionality to outclass traditional premium brands.

Massive Range, Fast Charging
BYD does more than build cars; they build chargers that fill batteries fast enough to embarrass legacy brands. Supporting their recent megawatt flash charging technology, the Great Han is engineered to dominate charging stations. The flagship will offer plug-in hybrid and pure electric configurations, benefiting directly from BYD’s advanced second-generation Blade Battery.
Preliminary specifications reveal numbers that should make Stuttgart nervous. The lineup features two key variants: an 880 km AWD LiDAR Flagship Edition and a staggering 1,008 km RWD LiDAR Exclusive Edition. Launching in the third quarter of this year, this vehicle represents a major push to reverse recent sales slumps from smaller models by targeting the upper crust of luxury car brands.

The Lowdown
The ultimate goal for BYD involves entering the North American market, with 2026 targeted as the arrival window for Chinese brands. They are meticulously building a diverse roster capable of unsettling established American and European players. We have already seen them tease vehicles that do things legacy automakers only dream of, such as the Yangwang U8 hyper SUV that can float on water.
Bringing a dedicated Porsche Taycan killer like the Great Han into the mix proves BYD is no longer content with the mass market. They are actively hunting high-margin luxury segments. If the Great Han delivers supercar acceleration alongside massive driving ranges, the old guard will face a serious fight. For now, Western enthusiasts can only wait for this electric storm to cross the ocean.
