Ford has announced another major recall this month, just days after thousands of Bronco Sports and Mavericks were recalled for an issue where suspension components could detach. The latest recall is no less serious but involves fewer models. Essentially, certain Explorer, Ranger, and Bronco vehicles with the 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine could suffer engine failure, which can lead to a sudden loss of drive power. Here’s everything that owners of these vehicles need to know.

According to the recall report on the NHTSA’s website, certain Ford vehicles with the 2.3-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine have an engine camshaft roller finger follower that could become dislodged from the valve stem. Ford found that one or more of these camshaft roller fingers may have been improperly installed during engine assembly, which could cause the engine to fail. This could result in the vehicle not starting or a loss of motive power, which can increase the chances of a crash. So far, Ford is aware of nine warranty claims and three field reports related to this engine defect.
The following models and model years are affected:
- 2025-2026 Ford Bronco (408 units)
- 2025-2026 Ford Explorer (895 units)
- 2025-2026 Ford Ranger (233 units)

In total, the recall extends to 1,536 Ford models. Interestingly, the Ford Mustang has not been recalled, even though it uses a version of the 2.3-liter engine, too. A small group of Mustangs with this engine were involved in a recall earlier this year, though, as the engines may be missing a piston pin circlip. Once again, this problem was linked to a fault during the assembly process. This otherwise responsive engine is available in various states of tune. It produces 300 horsepower in the Bronco and Explorer, while the Ranger gets a 270-hp version.
Ford’s remedy will be to replace the engine long block at no cost to customers. Unfortunately, it’s going to take several months for a fix to become available.

What Owners Should Do Now

Anyone who owns a Bronco, Explorer, or Ranger with the 2.3-liter engine should watch out for ticking or tapping engine noise as well as a low-volume engine leak when the car is running. The check engine light may also illuminate.
Owners will be notified via mail on June 15, 2026, but anyone wanting to take extra precautions can use their Vehicle Identification Number on the NHTSA website to check if their vehicle is involved in the recall; these VINs became searchable on May 28. Owners may also contact the Ford customer service line at 1-866-436-7332 for more information. Ford expects to mail out remedy notification letters, but only from November 30, 2026, which is roughly when the fix becomes available. That’s a long way off for anyone facing potential engine failure now.
The EcoBoost’s issues related to flawed production processes once more cast a shadow over Ford’s quality control struggles, which have led to a record-breaking number of recalls over the last few years.
