Dewalt announced a new 20V Max cordless sander on social media.
From the looks of it, I’d guess it’s a 6-inch sander, judging from the scale between the sanding pad and 5Ah battery.
The ergonomics look to be an improvement compared to their existing 20V Max 5″ random orbital sander.
At this time there are no press materials, and Dewalt has not yet responded to our requests for more information.
We’ll update you as we learn more.
Meet the Competition

Bosch announced a new 18V 6-inch random orbit sander for woodworking applications. It’s been a year and a half, and there’s still no word about if or when this will be launching in the USA.

Makita also has an XGT battery-powered 6-inch sander. Technically it’s not cordless, as its belt-wearable battery power source is detached.
This one is available here – buy it at Acme Tools.

Milwaukee has cordless 6″ sanders in their M12 battery platform. These are more suited for automotive body and paint work, rather than woodworking. You can buy it with 3/32″ orbital pattern and 3/16″ orbital pattern, via Acme Tools (as linked-to) and elsewhere.
Am I missing any?
I prefer 6″ sanders over 5″ for drawn-out sanding tasks, as they cover greater area with fewer passes, but I haven’t switched over from AC/corded to battery power yet. 5″ cordless sanders are compact and nimble, and great for quick tasks, but I’ve been accustomed to the infinite runtime of AC-powered sanders.
There aren’t many cordless 6″ sanders to choose from. It’s good to see Dewalt adding one to the competitive mix.
