I stumbled upon this Ox Tools Pro replaceable tip wood chisel, and am wondering if it’s a good buy.
This is Ox Tools’ 1″ chisel, and they also make a 3/4″ size.
It features a chunky rubberized-looking handle, replaceable striking cap, and holster-type belt case.
The starter set gives you the chisel plus 2 additional replaceable chisel tips for 3 total cutting tips.
Ox Tools has it priced at $40 for the starter set via multiple online retailers. A 3-pack of replacement chisel tips are ~$19 at the time of this posting, and you can get a striking cap replacement for under $4.
Let’s break it down. So for $40, you essentially get 3 fresh chisel cutting edges – plus the case. Additional cutting edges are under $19 for 3, or around $6.30 each.
Maybe we can consider the handle to be worth $13 and the case $8, since we’re given an approximate retail value for the 3 chisel tips that come with the starter kit.
Here are the prices I found for standalone 1″ construction-grade chisels:
- Crescent – $12 at Home Depot
- Jorgensen – $12 at Lowe’s
- Dewalt – $18 at Home Depot
- Buck Brothers (Made in USA) – $10 at Amazon
- Irwin – $15.49 at Amazon
So, is the Ox Tools a good buy?
Even if we ignore that regular one-piece wood chisels can be sharpened, at what point is the Ox Tools chisel more economical?
Are there user advantages to being able to swap out a worn chisel tip for a fresh one? Or is it a gimmick at a high price?
Price: $40
While not the same, would Bucket Boss’s tool holster (under $7 at Home Depot) suffice for holding a wood chisel?
