Other Markets, Different Demand
The differences between automotive markets are interesting; some regions require certain cars in segments that don’t sell well elsewhere. In other cases, brands repurpose and revive nameplates they no longer use to enter a segment they want to compete in.
That’s the case for one of Toyota’s most recognized models that had a long run but was recently killed off. The Avalon used to be a staple in Toyota’s lineup, but made way for the Crown’s entry in the U.S.; however, in China, the Avalon lives on and is getting a new model too.

China Avalon
Autohome reports it learned from official brand sources that the new Toyota Avalon for China will launch on November 5. The new Avalon will feature exterior and interior upgrades and offer both gasoline and hybrid variants.
On the outside, the first major change is the redesigned front grille, now featuring vertical chrome slats as the main design element. Above that grille is the now-iconic Toyota C-shaped headlight cluster we see on the Crown and the Camry, to which the Avalon is closely related. Size-wise, the new Avalon measures 4,990 mm (length), 1,850 mm (width), and 1,440 mm (height), with a wheelbase of 2,870 mm. The rims now feature a new design, while the rear lighting cluster sets the Avalon apart from its Toyota sedan siblings with its own distinct pattern and layout.

Premium Inside
The Avalon was always supposed to be an elevated Camry, bridging the gap between that model and the higher Lexus cars. That’s evident in the new Avalon’s interior, which features a wraparound design with a large infotainment screen, a HUD, and crystal trim that contrasts with the subtle two-tone piping on the seats and steering wheel. It also has other notable features like heated and ventilated seats, massaging functions for the front passengers, and an in-car fragrance system.
In terms of the powertrain, the Avalon will be offered with either a 2.0-liter gasoline engine that makes 170 hp, which is the same as the current Avalon, or a 2.5-liter gasoline-hybrid system that makes a combined 230 hp. The 2.0-liter gets a normal CVT, while the hybrid gets a specialized e-CVT.
