The Truck Slowdown Is Arriving Early

Previously, General Motors CFO Paul Jacobson argued that it would take around six months of sustained high gas prices before buyers began shifting to more affordable and fuel-efficient vehicles. However, during an automotive conference in Ypsilanti, Michigan, GM said it has already seen a significant move away from pickup trucks and SUVs over the past 12 weeks.

The recent conflict between the U.S. and Iran began in late February, disrupting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and contributing to higher fuel prices, with U.S. gasoline averaging around $4 per gallon. With high gas prices pushing buyers toward smaller vehicles sooner than expected, Automotive News reported that it could raise profit concerns for GM, as models like the Chevrolet Silverado, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Sierra, and GMC Yukon are among its highest-margin vehicles.

A Slow Return To Normal

The Trump administration said the Strait of Hormuz will be “completely open” by Friday, which could eventually help ease gas prices. However, the report noted that any drop in fuel prices is likely to be gradual. That could mean buyers may continue considering smaller vehicles until gas prices show a meaningful improvement.

GM says it is too early to call it a permanent trend, but executives are watching closely.

Still, GM has a wide range of affordable vehicles priced around $30,000 or less, mostly from Chevrolet, including the Trax and Trailblazer. Buick also competes in this space with the Envista and Encore GX. What GM lacks, however, is a mainstream sedan entry, even as automakers like Ford are reportedly considering a return to the segment as more buyers look for affordable options. Most mass-market sedans sold in the U.S. are currently offered by foreign brands, including Toyota, Honda, and Hyundai.

GM Navigates Uncertain Terrain

Electric vehicles could also draw more attention as fuel prices remain elevated. GM is the second-best-selling EV maker in the U.S. behind Tesla, with models such as the Chevrolet Equinox EV, GMC Sierra EV, and Cadillac Optiq.

For GM, the hope now is that gas prices ease and buyers start reconsidering pickup trucks and SUVs. That is especially important with the next-generation Chevy Silverado recently unveiled. Weaker demand for this type of vehicle could make it harder for the automaker to launch its redesigned profit drivers with strong momentum.
