Let’s Talk More About Klein’s Blackout ModBox Combo

Klein Tools Blackout ModBox Tool Box Combo at Lowes Store

I stopped by my Lowe’s store the other day.

First of all they had NONE of the new 250th limited edition Klein Tools (see New Klein 250th Limited Edition Tools Dropped at Lowe’s). Those were all long-gone.

So I looked for the Klein special edition all-black ModBox tool box combos, and found just one. It seems they’re in short supply, and it’s no wonder why.

Here’s a list of what you get, with links to the regular orange versions:

That comes out to $495. Right now the 15% coupon works on those too. So that would be $421 after discount.

The special edition combo is regularly $380, which is substantially lower. On sale today and tomorrow, it’s $323 with free shipping.

If you were on the fence about the Blackout ModBox combo, or even which ModBox combo to start with, this seems like a very compelling deal.

Is it Worth it?

I had mixed feelings about Klein’s original ModBox tool boxes. They were okay. The fit wasn’t perfect, as one of the boxes didn’t easily latch to the others.

I hadn’t tried any of Klein’s newer expansion products.

After a little nudging, Klein sent over a Blackout ModBox tool storage combo, with no strings attached.

I’ve been testing it out.

Is ModBox a better pick than other modular tool storage options right now? I don’t know. Let’s avoid this question for now.

Is this a great entry into the ModBox tool storage line? Absolutely.

This combo gives you a rolling tool box, 3 drawer tool box, and organizer. EVERYTHING is quickly accessible without having to unstack everything.

While $380 promo price – or the $323 discounted price – might seem a little high, I think it’s a great value for what you get. Plus free shipping.

My sample set arrived in 3 pieces, I’m not sure if the combo from Acme Tools, Lowe’s, or elsewhere ship in the same manner.

So far I’m pleased with the drawer design. The rolling drawer seems well designed and constructed, and the same for the middle drawer box.

We’ll need to spend more time talking about ModBox 2.0, because the latches are brilliant. I’ve got just the one organizer, but I like how it closes and relatches with minimal effort.

The color makes this line much more discreet, and potentially suitable for lifestyle use as well.

There’s nothing to complain about.

Functionality is better than with the first-gen products I tested, the color looks great, and the price is far better than I expected. Even if you miss Acme’s limited time coupon offer, $380 is a lot less than if you were to buy the regular orange-colored ModBox products separately.

And the selection is spot-on. 2-drawer rolling tool box, 3-drawer middle tool box, organizer for the top. They could have went with less expensive lidded tool box options, but the drawers offer greater utility.

I won’t urge that you run out and buy it, and I’m not yet up to discussing the pros and cons of ModBox compared to other systems. My ModBox experience is still very limited compared to the variety of Milwaukee Packout, Dewalt ToughSystem, Makita MakTrak, Ridgid Pro Gear, and other storage systems that I have tested.

But I will say that if you are on the fence, hurry up and make a decision, because I don’t think the inventory won’t last.

There’s a chance – I think – that these will be available again in the future, but there’s no guarantee of that. Here and now, I think the Blackout ModBox combo is a good storage product at a great price.
