Ryobi has launched 2 new 18V EDGE tabless cell Li-ion battery packs, in 8Ah and 12Ah sizes.
The new Ryobi tabless cordless power tool batteries deliver more power and longer runtime while
“running cooler, living longer, and charging faster than ever before.”

By now you should be familiar with what tabless Li-ion battery cells offer. No? Maybe an analogy will help.
Imagine 2 large rooms connected by a narrow hallway. It’s summer and there’s no air conditioning. It’s humid. The people next to you are sweaty and gross. It smells bad. There are 100 people in the room. The other room has air conditioning, cold beverages, and your favorite snack! That hallway is going to be jammed as everyone tries to head over to the other room all at once.
Now imagine that instead of a narrow hallway there are 20 wide pathways. No, 50. There’s plenty of room where you’re not rubbing against the walls or other people.
Which scenario will result in faster flow of people? Which will result in cooler temperatures?
Tabless cell vs tabbed cell Li-ion tech is similar, but instead of people moving down hallways we’re dealing with electrons moving down lower resistance pathways.
Shorter paths, and a lot more of them. Lower resistance to the flow of foot traffic – or in the case of batteries, electrons. There are tangible benefits.

The new Ryobi batteries also feature Cool-Core PRO technology, which is a heat management system designed to extend battery life and reduce temperatures.
This is achieved through laser-welded straps and upgraded heat sinks.
The new battery packs also have a durable overmold, increased impact durability, and anti-vibration technology.
For emphasis: upgraded heat sinks, increased impact durability, anti-vibration tech. That’s on top of the tabless cell tech.

The new Ryobi 18V tabless 8Ah battery, PBP1108, charges to 80% in as little as 35 minutes when paired with their fastest charger (PCG007).
It has an MSRP of $229.

The new Ryobi 18V 12Ah battery, PBP1112, charges to 80% in as little as 55 minutes with the PCG007 charger.

These look to be Ryobi’s most powerful and advanced batteries, and join the EDGE 4Ah battery that launched earlier.
The new batteries are launching this month (May 2026) and will be available exclusively at Home Depot.
Discussion
Craftsman recently updated their 20V 6Ah battery with tabless cells, and I was wondering how Ryobi could let themselves be overtaken like that.

But that didn’t last long.
Ryobi has taken the lead again, with tabless cell 8Ah and 12Ah batteries.
In my experience, tabless cell batteries like these could provide an instant upgrade for most demanding tools, but I think Ryobi’s 18V cordless outdoor power tools will especially benefit from them.
Yes, they’re pricy, but maybe we’ll see some money-saving or bundle promotions down the road.
I’m not surprised that Ryobi launched tabless cells with 8Ah and 12Ah charge capacity. What does surprise me is the attention towards internal upgrades, such as with the upgraded heatsink and durability features.

The fast charging seems great too.

Charging an 8Ah battery to 80% in as little as 35 minutes? Good luck doing that with the 24V Max USB-C-recharged batteries Kobalt recently came out with.
It looks like Ryobi took the lead with respect to DIY cordless power tool battery tech and capabilities.
