Ares Magnetic Socket Extensions

Earlier today I posted about the Koken magnetic pick-up tool socket. Magnetic extensions are different.

Magnetic extensions, such as the Ares set shown here (and linked below) are more for holding onto fasteners – mainly hex bolts – for easier installation.

You can use these as magnetic pickup tools too, when placed at the end of a long extension or breaker bar, but they’re going to have limited performance at such tasks.

Generally speaking, larger magnets have more holding power. Magnetic extensions have slender magnets so that they can fit inside the square recess of a standard socket to reach the bolt head.

The Koken socket has more surface area. It’s going to have an easier time picking up and holding onto larger steel parts or tools. Because the magnet is recessed, it will likely be less delicate than magnetic socket extensions.

On the other hand, the Koken socket is a unitasker. But what’s the point of a multi-tasking magnetic extension that really only performs well at its primary task?

Some are advertised with a bunch of screws clinging to the magnet. Sure, because they want you to buy it.

I’m not saying you should rush out and buy either type for use as a pickup tool. If you ask me, I think one should pickup magnetic pickup tool earlier than any kind of magnetic socket for part or tool retrieval tasks.

But if you want to hold certain fasteners tighter to sockets for easier installation, that’s where a magnetic extension can work well. It’s at least more elegant and less messy than duct tape.

If you like the idea of a magnetic socket that converts your extensions or breaker bar into a pickup tool, it’s good to know the Koken exists.
