Thermos has recalled around 5.8 million food jars and 2.3 million food and beverage containers.
Affected models are Thermos 3000 Stainless King, Thermos 3020 food jar, and Thermos Sportsman 3010 food and beverage bottle.
Model numbers are SK3000, SK3020, and SK3010.
The affected containers were sold in a variety of different colors between around March 2008 and July 2024.
They were sold at Target, Walmart, Amazon, and other stores.
Thermos received 27 reports of injury, including several impact and laceration injuries that required medical attention. 3 consumers reported permanent vision loss after being hit in the eyes.
The official recall says the problem is with perishable food or beverages that are stored in the container for an extended period of time. It’s my understanding that this will lead to a buildup of gases. The stopper is not vented, and so the affected Thermos containers contain the high pressure.
Then, when the unvented container is opened, the stopper can forcefully eject and pose a serious impact or laceration injury.
Remedy: discontinue use immediately and contact Thermos for a free replacement pressure relief stopper or replacement bottle. For the food jars, a photo of the disposed stopper should be enough. The recalled bottles will have to be sent back with a prepaid shipping label.
