I wish I bought more Dewalt USA-made screwdrivers while I had the chance.
Dewalt’s cushion-grip screwdriver was okay, but kind of generic-feeling. Their molded ergo-grip driver was better.
I bought both in Phillips #2 a while back, thinking that’d be enough to get a feel for the quality and comfort. And it was.
But it wasn’t too long before Dewalt discontinued them both, and the opportunity to buy more of either had passed.
I was looking through more of my photos, and found that the cushion grip screwdrivers were sold at Home Depot stores. They had the 6pc set for $40.
Today, Home Depot has Milwaukee’s 6pc set in stores for $55.
I really like Milwaukee’s USA-made screwdrivers. They have better tips, with laser-etched anti-slip texture.
But the Dewalt ergonomically-shaped cushion-grip screwdriver would have been strong competition.
I felt that the Dewalt screwdriver was like an improved version of SBD’s Proto Duratek screwdriver. It was pricey, but not economical for what it offered.
Dewalt has a 10pc set for $28 at Home Depot, but it just doesn’t appeal to me.
At the time, I paid $6.49 for the vinyl grip screwdriver (DWHT66397), and $11.99 for the ergo cushion grip screwdriver with hex bolster (DWHT60446).
Given the $12 price for the ergo-style screwdriver, which seems like a fair description given both styles have cushion grips, you can understand why I was reluctant to splurge for a full set.
Plus, I was already set with screwdrivers. Maybe I could use more sizes, but probably not a full set.
I believe I gave away the slip-grip driver, but won’t be parting with the ergo-shaped tool anytime soon.
What bugs me about the tool industry today is that we no longer get the tools brands are fully capable of.
Dewalt can make quality screwdrivers in the USA. They’ve proven this. There’s evidence in my tool box. For them to not do so anymore is a choice.
I’ve tried their MaxFit/ToughSeries screwdrivers. They’re not bad at all,
The USA-made screwdriver has a more comfortable handle and its tip is as strong and hard-wearing as I’ve encountered.
I should have bought more.
