I started testing the new Milwaukee M18 brushless blower, model 3044-20, which they sent out to me for review consideration.
Compared to the flagship M18 FUEL blower (3017), this one is a little less powerful (450 CFM vs 500 CFM, 11N blowing force vs 12.2N), lacks a variable speed sliding lock – but does still have a variable speed trigger with lock-on button, and is not as quiet (62 dB vs 54 dB).
Basically, it’s a slight downgrade vs the M18 FUEL model, in favor of lower pricing. The M18 brushless model is also lighter in weight (4.4 lbs vs 5.1 lbs).
On their website, in response to a customer complaint, Milwaukee says that the design focus for the 3044 was on “improved ergonomics and runtime rather than maximum peak output.”
I only used it a little bit, to clear out some of the dust and leaves from my garage, the transition to the driveway, and then the driveway.
I checked the specs, as it does feel more compact and lighter, and I was sure at first that it was my imagination.
You get full throttle lock-on, and a variable speed trigger switch. The FUEL model has a variable speed lock-on function, in addition to the variable speed trigger switch.
Optional nozzle accessories are available for the FUEL model. I did not see similar mounting compatibility for this model.
This feels like a bare-bones model, and it worked perfectly fine. I felt that the sound was a little more shrill than for the M18 FUEL model.
It was easy and comfortable to use.
Milwaukee designed the blower to deliver consistent performance “through battery pack discharge,” meaning the max power should remain the same throughout its use.
This is the Milwaukee M18 cordless blower to consider if you want a more basic and lighter weight model at a lower price. Step up to the M18 FUEL (3017) if you want the variable lock-on slider, optional attachment compatibility, lower noise, and higher blowing performance.
I’ll be using it a bit more to get a feel for things. Performance wise, it’s hard to tell the difference. I think the noise level – this one is still fairly quiet but not as quiet – and lock-on vs variable speed lock-on are going to be the mot impactful differences.
Frankly, I think it’s great to have options. Between this brushless blower, the M18 brushless blower, and the M18 Fuel dual battery brushless blower, there’s something for everyone.
Thank you to Milwaukee for providing the test sample.
