Dewalt Tabless FlexVolt Battery 12Ah Teaser

It’s official – there’s going to be a Dewalt FlexVolt battery with tabless Li-ion cells.

Readers pointed me to recent coverage of a Home Depot event where Dewalt announced and talked about the new Flexvolt tabless battery.

According to Dewalt, their current FlexVolt 12Ah battery is good for runtime, but their 9Ah battery performs better with respect to power.

The upcoming FlexVolt 12Ah battery, featuring higher performing tabless Li-ion cells, will deliver more power than their current 12Ah battery.

That’s all we know so far.

Discussion

It was only a matter of time before Dewalt launched a tabless FlexVolt battery, and 12Ah was the most likely option.

I have had older Dewalt FlexVolt 12Ah batteries overheat before, and it takes a while for them to cool down. I think that tabless cells are definitely going to be a benefit for certain Dewalt 20V Max and 60V Max cordless power tools.

It’s not yet clear whether Dewalt will sell the two batteries alongside each other, or if the new tabless FlexVolt battery will replace the existing battery.

Will they also launch tabless cell FlexVolt batteries in other sizes? This is the first we’ve heard of any new FlexVolt battery, and only in the 12Ah size so far.

I’m not too surprised by the 12Ah charge capacity – Milwaukee (M18 FORGE), Makita (XGT), Bosch (18V Expert), and Dewalt (20V Max XR PowerPack) utilize 4Ah tabless battery cells.

Hilti is an outlier that stepped up to higher charge capacity (13.5Ah) in their 3-row battery pack – see New Hilti Cordless Power Tools, Batteries, Storage for 2026.

Maybe Dewalt will upgrade some other FlexVolt batteries with tabless cells, or introduce a new size, such as Hilti did with their Nuron system.

What are tabless battery cells, and why should we care?

Thank you to Big Richard for the heads-up! Also be sure to check out more VCG tool content on YouTube.
