Tekton launched their own made-in-Germany automatic wire strippers, model PSP21001.
There is no shortage of similar wire strippers on the market. While this one has strong resemblances to some of those tools, Tekton’s doesn’t seem to be a simple “lick and stick” relabeling of an existing tool.
As I see it, these have a grippy overmold, tether hole, and replacement parts are available.
The Tekton wire stripper has an integrated wire cutter (typically standard for this type of tool), adjustable wire stripping depth (also standard), and V-notched blades (common), and spring-action handle (standard).
The wire stripping range is 24 to 5 AWG, or 0.2 to 16 mm². The cutter can be used on copper and aluminum conductors up to 9 AWG.
Tekton cautions that the cutting blade is NOT replaceable, while the stripping blades are. In other words, avoid cutting thicker or harder wire that could potentially permanently damage the blade.
The tool is launching at $75, and you can pick up a set of replacement jaws for $25.
Why buy the Tekton over something like the Knipex 12 62 180 (I own a pair, they’ve been great)?
Tekton: strips 24 to 5 AWG, cuts up to 9 AWG copper conductors, stripping depth 3/16″ to 1″, $75
Knipex: strips 24 to 10 AWG, cuts up to 14 AWH solid, 10 AWG stranded, stripping depth 1/4″ to 11/16″, ~$54
These Knipex feel a little flimsy compared to some other automatic wire strippers I have. The Tekton, with its larger stripping depth range, should be a little stronger.
$75 is a lot for wire strippers. Over $50 is still a lot. Jokari has one for around $40 at Amazon.
Automatic wire strippers – Tekton’s included – often have a lot of plastic.
From the images and specs, I would expect the Tekton wire strippers to be on the higher end with respect to strength and quality.
I expect them to be competitive with respect to performance and durability.
