An automotive fashion statement

High fashion costs more because it’s not just clothing—it’s an entire statement, a combination of craft, materials, and brand prestige that you’re paying for as much as the garment itself. With the 2026 Mercedes-Maybach SL680, it’s the brand itself that carries weight. When you buy a Gucci, a Chanel, or a Maybach, you’re not just buying a jacket or a car; you’re buying a reputation, an aesthetic, and, let’s face it, exclusivity.  It’s why a jacket from a luxury brand can cost hundreds or even thousands more than a nearly identical one from a fast-fashion chain. And so it is with the 2026 Mercedes-Maybach SL680, a car that’s basically an SL63 doing duty as a line-topping fashion bauble.

Powertrain & driving dynamics: 10/10

Beneath the plush Maybach veneer, the SL680 is basically an SL63 in disguise. It still packs the same potent 577-horsepower twin-turbocharged V8, nine-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive that dispense track-day chaos in other SLs. So speed is not in question. But Maybach has taken the edge off, muted the theatrics, and polished the SL into something more refined. Maybach started by civilizing the SL680’s suspension. The car now swallows every bump and ripple rather than punishing the SL680’s occupants. Its ride whispers luxury, its settings a subtle concession to a boulevard-bound life.

The end result is an SL that’s less track-honed missile, more rolling country club. The aggression has been softened, the edges sanded down, leaving a car that cruises in comfort without losing its swagger. It retains enough athleticism that it’s fun to drive on your favorite stretch of road. This isn’t your grandfather’s cruiser. It’s the perfect balance of menace and manners.

Technology: 9/10

Inside, the SL680 is a tech buffet. A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster sits right in front of you, joined by an 11.9-inch MBUX touchscreen that handles everything else, from navigation to climate, assuming you can remember exactly which corner of the menu Mercedes decided to bury that function in. It’s intuitive when it wants to be, maddening when it doesn’t. But that’s part of the charm.

Thankfully, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are baked in, because Mercedes understands what some other luxury brands clearly haven’t: owners still want their phones to do the heavy lifting. There are all kinds of futuristic tech wizardry at your fingertips, but you don’t have to fight the interface just to get Spotify playing. It’s convenience dressed up in couture.

Pricing & value: 7/10

Can a car that starts at $224,900 have value? Before you answer that, consider its competition, which includes the $269,000 Aston Martin DB12 V8 Volante and $203,000 Maserati GranCabrio, neither of which has cheaper siblings plying the nation’s highways. The exclusivity here stems from its wardrobe and price; the basic underpinnings, at $37,050 less, are the SL 63 Roadster. But high fashion demands a premium.

Exterior design: 5/10

A Maybach has to look the part. The 2026 SL680 Monogram Series does that loud and proud, draped in a Garnet Red Metallic with a black hood plastered with Mercedes-Maybach logos, a $6,500 option. It screams that this isn’t just a Mercedes with a bigger price tag; it’s a Mercedes that announces its price before you even reach the driveway. The look is bold, even brazen, visually loud in a way the brand rarely dares. It’s high-fashion and clearly over-the-top, the sort of style choice that engineering-driven Mercedes-Benz has long thought unnecessary. It makes you wonder if a few too many of such choices had something to do with Chief Design Officer Gorden Wagener’s recent exit. Either way, the SL680 Monogram Series is a statement, and it demands that everyone notice.

Interior design & quality: 10/10

Step into the SL680, and you’ll find a cabin lavishly lined in poshness. There’s not a hint of plastic anywhere. Every surface has been cajoled into luxury. White Nappa leather? Check. White carpets? Absolutely. The seats heat, cool, and massage you with the delicate touch of someone who knows you have better things to do than suffer. Airscarf neck heaters let you drive top-down in January without admitting that convertibles have seasons.

Rear seats? Forget it. This is a two-person show. Storage exists in tiny doses, just enough for a briefcase or a small bag, because the trunk, all 7.5 cubic feet with the roof down, is basically a glovebox for the rich. You don’t pack for this car. You arrive. Someone else brings the rest. The SL680’s cabin is a luxury manifesto on four wheels, a machine that announces wealth without ever needing to honk. And somehow, it makes you okay with that.

Final verdict: 8/10

The 2026 Mercedes-Maybach SL680 is magnificent, indulgent, and faintly impractical. It’s the automotive equivalent of a perfectly tailored tuxedo paired with designer sneakers. It’s a grand touring car for people who want sports-car performance without sacrificing a hint of comfort, and who also enjoy the quiet thrill of knowing they’ve spent vastly more than necessary just to achieve that perfect combination of speed, style, and swagger.

It accelerates like it has a vendetta against stoplights, corners with surprising agility for a car this plush, and glides over potholes like they’re polite suggestions rather than obstacles. Inside, every surface is softened, conspiring to remind you that comfort is mandatory, not optional. It’s the perfect combination of a car you can drive at 100 mph and still feel like you’re attending a five-star gala. It’s indulgence made mobile, an unapologetic celebration of wealth, taste, and the fine art of effortlessly overdoing it.
